"Just living is not enough", said the butterfly, "one must have sunshine,
freedom and a
little flower."
-Hans Christian Andersen
This site represents a collection of my paintings, created within the urban shadow, where nature has, to an extent, been walled and fenced from reach. Within this space of enclosure,
painting becomes a thread—wending back to the pastoral,
touching the ghosts of the commons buried under both boundary and brick.
Each stroke is an attempt to diminish our separation from the soil and return to the quiet persistence of that which lay beneath the stones of paving.
"everyone must take the time to sit and watch the leaves turn red"
"April may be cruel, having to march in a chain, flowers, the birds, all begin
again"
"Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day is hardly a
waste of
time"
